With humble beginnings began repairing steam-powered ships in the late 19th century. In response to hostilities between Japan and China in the 1930’s Cheoy Lee produced powerful cargo ships that could outrun Japanese blockages. Two decades later they diversified from commercial to pleasure vessels.
The shipbuilder held true to their time-honored tradition of innovation in the early 1960's when they pioneered the development and use of fiberglass construction techniques and soon phased out wood hulls. With their constant advances with the material, their work became the fore-runner of today’s industry standard, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) sandwich construction. In 1977 Cheoy Lee built their first molded glass-reinforced plastic motor-sailing hull. The following year their 48' sports yacht was first all fiberglass vessel produced. It gained notoriety in both the pleasure craft and commercial patrol boat sectors with technological advances and performance no other yacht had accomplished. Today Cheoy Lee builds vessels of fiberglass, steel and aluminum.
