Air Purifying Options for Your Yacht

There is nothing more unappealing than being greeted with a nasty odor when walking into your yacht. That is the last thing you want to deal with before a boat day with family and friends. Often times, when boats aren’t in use for an extended amount of time and no air is circulating, your yachts closed-off, damp environments creates the perfect concoction for mold growth, mildew, and other airborne issues. Even more concerning are the health issues that can arise from poor air quality. If you are dealing with unwanted odors or health issues while onboard, it may be time to look into an air-purifying system for your yacht.

First things First | HVAC System

If you use your yacht regularly, keeping your HVAC system in check may help prevent these problems. HVAC systems do more than cool rooms below deck; they also condition the air by essentially drying the area. Dry areas reduce the likelihood of mold and other airborne issues from developing. Keeping up with routine maintenance, and replacing filters punctually, will help keep air quality at a high level.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

For those who don’t regularly use their yacht or for those that continue to face lingering odors, the best option for your boat is an air-purifying system. These systems are pivotal to a great smelling boat while eliminating harmful pathogens. Air purifiers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and forms; and help your HVAC system enhance air quality onboard. These handy systems help pull airborne particles out of the air you breathe while inside your yacht, so you don’t breathe them in, leaving you with a clean smelling boat and healthy quality air.

Different Types of Air Purifying Options for Your Yacht

There are a few different types of air purifying systems to choose from that include portable systems, in-duct air systems, and gel-based air purifiers. Portable air systems essentially reduce odors from mildew, food, tobacco, and other sources, by using Photocatalytic Nano-Mesh technology with ultraviolet light. In other words, air enters the filter, and the UV light bulb in the purifier activates a titanium-diode catalyst on the surface of the mesh. Pollutants and odors are then absorbed, and the clean air passes through the system. In-duct models use the same technology but are installed in-line in HVAC duct hoses. These in-line systems come in a variance of dimensions based on Btu units.

Gel-based air purifiers, such as Ocean Air, is a product that fights odors and air pollutants much like an air freshener. However, these gel purifiers contain Tea Tree Oil, which provides antimicrobial properties, perfect for keeping mold and mildew particles out of air. These easy-to-use gel purifiers deliver a light and airy citrus scent that diminishes over time as air quality onboard improves. These typically last about 30-45 days for an 8oz container.

Princess Yacht Owners | Yacht Safe® Air Purification System

If you own a Princess Yacht, there is another option for you. Last year, Princess in collaboration with a leading US supplier of air purification systems, developed Yacht Safe® Marine Air Purification Systems.  Yacht Safe® utilizes bi-polar ionizing equipment manufactured in the US and is designed to continually purify the interior air aboard a yacht through the removal of viruses, bacteria, mold, and other harmful pollutants. The results of laboratory testing of this technology have shown removal rates of up to 99% on various viruses including, strains of Coronavirus, bacteria, and mold. Learn more here.

To sum it up, research shows that filtering systems can help remove harmful particles from indoor spaces, especially allergens, smoke, and mold. Air purifiers work best in combination with proper filtration and cleaning techniques onboard.
