2021 InTheBite Captain of the Year: Tony Carrizosa
Dating back to 2003, the annual Captain of the Year Cup is the world’s only quantifiable metric for comparing the tournament success of captains in the sportfishing industry. Every year, InTheBite holds the renowned competition composed of five divisions: East Coast, Florida, Gulf Coast, Hawaii, and International, and 90 approved sportfishing tournaments. Each division award recognizes captains within the context of where they fish and the captains fishing alongside them.
International Division Winner
For 2021, Captain Tony Carrizosa with Team Galati took home the award for the International Division — Captain of the Year. The standings for the International division were as follows:
- Capt. Tony Carrizosa // Team Galati // 750 pts.
- Los Suenos, Leg 3, 1st Place, 500 pts.
- Los Suenos Series Champion, 250 pts.
- Capt. Jimmy Werling // Triple Sea // 600 pts.
- White Marlin Roundup, 2nd Place, 300 pts.
- The Shootout, 2nd Place, 300 pts.
- Capt. Chris Kaulen // Marlin Darlin // 600 pts.
- Bakers Bay Invitational, 3rd Place, 100 pts.
- Custom Shootout, 1st Place, 500 pts.
Captain of the Year Scoring System
The scoring system is pretty simplistic, awarding 500 points for first, 300 for second place, and 100 for third in the release divisions of authorized tournaments. For sportfishing tournaments that recognize the largest fish, there are 500-points awarded for the winner. Also, captains that win series championships are awarded an additional 250-points.
